This training series is for acupuncturists, acupuncture students , bodyworkers and other touch-based practitioners and who want to make their practice more trauma-informed while also being more embodied as they work. Through a combination of somatic practices, lecture and discussion we will explore the autonomic nervous system, with specific attention to polyvagal theory, in order to better identify and tend to survival states in our patients and ourselves. We will put this in the context of the treatment space as well as the larger culture in which we live, acknowledging the ways in which systemic oppression and unattended privilege and bias perpetuate harm in healing spaces.
Developing our relational skills to assist with ongoing informed consent, respectful communication (through words, touch, presence) and compassionate, non-judgemental attention we will begin to reshape our own autonomic nervous systems and those of our patients, moving us all towards a greater felt sense of safety and connection. This positively benefits treatment goals, health outcomes and prevents vicarious trauma.
This training takes place virtually over the course of a weekend and is a prerequisite for a the Relational Medicine Mentorship, a small group mentorship for acupuncturists and acupuncturists-in-training focused on developing the presence and skills to treat trauma, which begins April 2024.
